Overcoming Networking Resistance
In this week’s episode, we’re talking about overcoming networking resistance. You know, that dread you might get in the pit of your stomach when it’s time to research, sign up for or go to an event or meet with someone for coffee. It’s like broccoli – you know it’s good for you, but you just can’t bring yourself to do it.
First things first: You’re not going to get over your fear of networking with the flip of a switch. This is going to take some work and some steadfastness, but before you know it, you’ll be an old pro at this!
I’ll tell you a little story I tell sometimes. I used to call one of two friends before an event, freaking out as I circled the block before I went in. I had to pinpoint what my goal was for the networking event before I could leave. Was it to stay for a certain amount of time? Talk to a specific number of people? Have a specific number of meaningful conversations? I had to SIKE myself UP to go into these things.
And despite that planning and siking up process, some were still total busts. I cried all the way home a couple of times because I felt like a phony and stupid. But as I went to more and more events, it felt less dire. AND I was able to choose the groups I was going to more wisely, so that I was…finding my tribe (which we will talk about on May 23 with the founder of Six Degrees Society, Emily Merrill.)
In this week’s episode,
I’ll be talking to you about how to overcome any networking resistance you have using the four major hangups I run into with my clients and students. You know, those things that make you want to get back in your PJs and order a pile of nachos (no? Just me?).
Here they are so if any of ‘em sound familiar, this show is a must listen for you:
Hangup #1: I don’t know anyone
Hangup #2: No one will want to talk to me
Hangup #3: What am I going to talk about?
Hangup #4: Followup Hangup
Take a listen and let me know what you think. From experience (my own and my clients), overcoming networking resistance allows you to:
- Easily and seamlessly find the right events that you just ‘belong’ at
- Even thinking about canceling or no-showing will be a thing of the past
- Authentically show up as you- unapologetically you
- Not circle the block like me, circa 2014, pacing like a maniac
- Not cry all the way home like me, again, circa 2014
Enjoy the episode and do let me know if any other tactics and ideas have worked for you!!
