Employee of the Month is a talk show hosted by Catie Lazarus. She interviews phenomenal folks about their careers, be it comedian Jon Stewart or activist Gloria Steinem or Congressman Barney Frank or the Guinness Book of World Record Holder for Most Guinness Book of World Records. These candid conversations may inspire you to finish your novel or start one or simply self medicate. Either way, she hopes you have as much fun listening as she and her guests do talking. EMEL MATHLOUTHI sings live and reveals if Paris or NYC is better for artists

Emel Mathlouthi is a brilliant singer and songwriter with an intoxicating, ethereal voice, who became an international sensation as her music inspired fellow Tunisians fighting for their freedom during the Arab Spring. Tunisian govern banned her music from the country’s radio as her lyrics criticized the regime of then-President Zine El Abidine Ben Ali. So in 2008, she fled for Paris and continued to sing defiant songs and post them on social media. A video of her singing her song Kelmti Horra (my word is free) in front of 10,000 Parisians went viral. She lived between France and Tunisia, and in 2012, returned to Tunis and sang "Kelmti Horra," and, a couple hours later it was (former) President Ben Ali who would flee the country. Her album also titled Kelmti Horra made its debut in 2012 and received critical acclaim. She has performed all over the world, including a solo performance at the Nobel Peace Prize Ceremony. She made her Joe’s Pub debut on Employee of the Month Show and it was spectacular to hear Mathlouthi sing live and you’ll hear a bit from the artist about how tough it is to break in and how lonely it can feel in New York and how Paris is easier to navigate as an artist and a human. Still, she is happy to be in New York and we are happy to have her, even though I remembered feeling the same way when I moved here and still do sometimes. We are a city of immigrants and artists, but as Mathlouthi reveals it is harder and harder to scrape by in New York and find your rhythm.
