Good Grief! Join pop culture blockhead Geek Outlaw and co-host Spunk Destructor as they discuss The Peanuts Movie and recap the wild wild ride that has been the first six episodes of The Walking Dead's sixth season thus far.

With the upcoming Star Wars sequel featuring the original cast, a disaster comedy based on 80’s arcade video games come to life, Back to the Future II’s 30th anniversary, and new entries into the Terminator and Jurassic Park franchises, the year 2015 may very well go down as the year of nostalgia. Although when it comes to Hollywood, that proclamation could technically have been made each year for the past two decades.

The difference this year is Tinseltown seems to have had more success than usual (minus the new Gem and the Holograms film making roughly the equivalent of a Happy Meal at McDonalds.)  Outside of that major stinker, Jurassic World surged to the third highest box office gross of all-time – which will most likely be eclipsed in short order by a tiny little space opera coming out this winter – and Back to the Future made national headlines – and buckets full of money with new home media sales – in celebration of October 21st, 2015; the date Marty and Doc travel to the future in the trilogy’s first sequel.

 

 

Dare I say, another home run was hit recently with the release of The Peanuts Movie by 20th Century Fox. Charles Schultz's pop culture phenomenon turned 65 this year, and to commemorate the occasion, Blue Sky Studios (Ice Age, Rio) brought Charlie Brown and the rest of the gang to life in their first ever full length theatrical motion picture. (And in brilliant 3D no less.)

As excited as I was to see this, I tried keeping my enthusiasm in check knowing how Hollywood has a tendency to rip our childhoods to shreds in order for studio executives to have annual upgrades to their leather reclining office chairs with built-in toilets and seat warmers. Sadly, they tend to purchase the models that include everything but unique ideas.

 

 

Alas, I’m happy to report The Peanuts Movie didn’t succumb to any unnecessary makeovers due in large part to Craig and Bryan Schulz (Charles’ son and grandson respectively) having written the script and given some producing responsibilities. My current arch nemesis Paul Feig (another story for another day) also produced, however based on the accounts I’ve read, Feig and the entire studio in general were kept in check by the Shultz clan in exchange for the use of the property on the big screen.

 

 

As you will undoubtedly hear in the podcast, I loved this flick but much of that comes from having grown up with the comic strip and holiday specials as a wee tot. Thus my bias for the film comes from a place of built-in devotion. Surprisingly, though was Spunky Destructor’s enjoyment of the film. Seeing as I literally had to pull her out of the car through the window and into the theater to see this film, her final review and overall satisfaction with the flick should provide a perspective for those not beholden (aka obsessed) with the characters as I am.

 

 

 

The other half of our marathon long podcast took us in an entirely different direction, one that exchanges laughing beagles and yellow birds for splattered brain matter and intestinal buffets. As many have probably already witnessed, season 6 has been one hell of an e-ticket, particularly the first three episodes. If you haven’t seen it yet, stop reading this now and don’t listen to this podcast.
