Carbon Dating Series Stars Amanda Serra-Marcie Barkin: 2BB 067

We interview Amanda Serra and Marcie Barkin, stars of the hit Carbon Dating Series, a web TV show on YouTube.  Amanda is also the creator and writer of the show and says Marcie is her muse. Marcie would rather be a male’s muse but will take what she can get.

They have completed their first season with 9 episodes on their YouTube channel. The 2nd season is currently being written.  They were both in an acting class where the teacher pointed out that with digital media the way it is today, why not go out and make your own show. They both decided to create their own show online.

At first, they thought they could shoot the show on an IPhone, but after Amanda spoke to a producer friend of hers, Linda Palmer, she liked the idea and wanted to come on as producer and director.  She helped guide them through the first season and educated them on the production end of things.

Baby Boomers are able to go out and do anything they want and life can begin at 60.  There’s no reason to be afraid of technology and we should use it because we’re still relevant.

The Carbon Dating Series has qualified and is in the running for Emmy nominations in a new category called short format series comedy or drama.

The Carbon Dating Series is about the whimsical misadventures of two Baby Boomers awkwardly aging in a youth-oriented society. It’s chock full of flashbacks and fantasy sequences and follows the lives of two Baby Boomer women as they intersect with children coming back home to live, new relationships that come and go.

Should they get botox or not in order to compete?
Is pole dancing a good idea?

The two lead characters Amelia and Madelyn have been best friends since college. Both are single. One has been divorced and one is a widow. Amanda plays Amelia, a Midwestern woman who is always happy and in a good mood. She bumbles her way along in life and is mostly oblivious. Marcie’s character Madelyn is perennially an inch away from righteous anger and has her own internal soapbox. There isn’t one episode where her character is not humiliated in some comical way.

The show also stars Michael Gross, the father from Family Ties. He’s also a producer on the show. Madelyn is trying to make him her boyfriend in the show.
What is a webisode or web series?
A webisode or web series is the same as a TV show except that you watch it on your computer. Some webisodes are launched on Vimeo or Youtube Red or their own website. The Carbon Dating Series has its own channel on YouTube. Each episode lasts about 5 minutes. Online audiences have short attention spans so it’s important to keep them moving and active.

Amanda says you can watch the entire Carbon Dating Series first season in less than an hour. You can find it by going to Youtube and typing in Carbon Dating Series on the search bar. Watch it when you take a break from making dinner or when you’re doing your laundry.

The show ended up not being filmed with an IPhone and has a full production crew. It’s a union – SAG-AFTRA production. They try to use as many women on the crew as possible including a woman director of photography, director, sound, makeup, and visual graphics artist.  However, their craft service person (on-set cook) is a guy. The fact that Michael Gross is part of the show gave them the credibility they needed to be funded.

Linda Palmer had worked with Michael Gross before and was able to get him on board. He liked the script and has been integral in moving the project forward. The goal is to sell the show as a ½ hour sitcom.
